Pandemic observations from the UK

We have collated outcomes so from the current UK winter and Swine Flu attacks. Here are some findings that need heeding in the Southern Hemisphere this coming winterAu;

Deaths from H1N1 have occurred
26 deaths per 100,000 is the ratio
Overall impact has been lower than expected
Waves of infection are unlikely
Cost so far is over $ 1b
Tamiflu does not stop H1N1
Vaccines are important
Hand hygiene is necessary
Children are the most exposed age group

Swine Flu USA - Situation Update

Vaccination: Centers for Disease Control USA recommends influenza vaccination as the first and most important step in protecting against the flu. The week of January 10-16, 2010 marks this season’s National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW), a national observance to highlight the importance of continuing influenza vaccination beyond the holiday season. As part of NIVW, CDC encourages young adults, ages 19-24, to get vaccinated against 2009 H1N1. The proportion of younger people being impacted by 2009 H1N1 is much greater than what occurs during seasonal flu with high rates of illness in this age group.
